How Long Does Composting Take? Timeline by Method

The time composting takes depends almost entirely on the method you are using and how well you manage the four key variables: carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, moisture, oxygen, and pile size. The range across methods is wide: a well-managed hot pile can produce finished compost in four weeks, while a neglected cold pile may take two years or more to produce usable material.

Hot Composting Timeline

Hot composting, when properly managed, produces finished compost in four to eight weeks. The timeline breaks down roughly as follows.

Week 1: The pile heats up as thermophilic bacteria establish and begin consuming nitrogen-rich materials. Internal temperatures reach 130°F to 160°F. The pile visibly shrinks as material breaks down. Turning every two to three days is required to maintain oxygen supply and move cooler outer material into the hot core.

Weeks 2 to 4: The pile continues to heat after each turning, then cools more quickly as the most readily available nitrogen is consumed. Material becomes progressively less recognizable as its original inputs. Turning frequency can reduce to every three to five days.

Weeks 4 to 6: The pile no longer reheats significantly after turning. Material looks dark and crumbly throughout. The curing phase begins: the pile is left undisturbed for one to two weeks to allow any remaining unstable compounds to stabilize and the microbial community to shift toward the organisms associated with mature, finished compost.

Week 6 to 8: Cured, finished compost is ready for screening and use.

This timeline assumes the pile was built at the right C:N ratio, is kept at field capacity moisture throughout, is turned consistently, and has a sufficient starting mass of at least one cubic yard.

Cold Composting Timeline

Cold composting produces finished compost in six to eighteen months, depending on ambient temperatures, the mix of inputs, and whether the pile is turned occasionally or left completely undisturbed.

A cold pile that receives occasional turning every few weeks, is kept reasonably moist, and contains a mix of kitchen and garden waste typically produces usable compost from the bottom within nine to twelve months. A completely passive pile of autumn leaves with no added greens and no turning may take eighteen months to two years.

Cold composting in winter slows significantly because mesophilic bacteria, the primary decomposers in a cold pile, are temperature-sensitive. Decomposition virtually stops when pile temperatures drop below freezing, then resumes in spring. This is normal and does not damage the pile or the material.

Vermicomposting Timeline

A properly managed worm bin with red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) processes kitchen scraps into worm castings in approximately two to three months from start to first harvest, assuming the bin is set up correctly and not overloaded. Harvest frequency then depends on the volume of inputs and the size of the worm population. Most home worm bins can be partially harvested every sixty to ninety days.

What Slows Composting Down

The variables that most commonly extend the timeline beyond the expected range are: a C:N ratio that is too carbon-heavy (slow microbial activity due to nitrogen deficiency), insufficient moisture (microorganisms cannot function without water), inadequate pile size (the pile cannot generate or retain heat), infrequent turning in a pile that needs active aeration, and cold ambient temperatures in an uninsulated pile during winter.

How to Tell When Compost Is Finished
