Best Slug and Snail Bait for Gardens

The single most important product decision for slug and snail control is choosing between iron phosphate bait and metaldehyde bait, because the two active ingredients differ significantly in their safety profiles for non-target animals. Iron phosphate is the appropriate default for the vast majority of residential garden situations. Metaldehyde is faster-acting but carries documented toxicity risks to pets and wildlife that restrict its appropriate use to specific, controlled situations. This guide covers the best products in each category and explains exactly when each is the right choice.

Iron Phosphate Baits: The Default Choice for Most Gardens

Iron phosphate is an organic compound that occurs naturally in soil and breaks down into iron and phosphate after application, both naturally occurring soil nutrients. It kills slugs and snails by interfering with calcium metabolism, causing them to stop feeding and die within three to six days of ingesting the bait. The delayed kill means slugs are not seen dead on the surface (they typically retreat to harborage sites and die there), which sometimes leads homeowners to incorrectly conclude the bait is not working.

Iron phosphate bait is safe to use around children, pets, birds, ground beetles, earthworms, and other non-target soil organisms when used at label rates. It is OMRI listed and appropriate for certified organic production. It is the correct choice for vegetable gardens, raised beds, gardens frequented by children and pets, and any setting where wildlife or beneficial soil organism exposure to the bait is possible.

Sluggo (Iron Phosphate)

Sluggo is the most widely recognized iron phosphate bait brand and is available at most garden retailers. The 1 lb and 2.5 lb bags are appropriate for standard garden beds; the 5 lb bags serve larger areas economically. Apply as scattered pellets at the label rate of approximately one teaspoon per square yard, never in piles, and reapply every one to two weeks or after significant rain. Effective in both wet and dry conditions, though somewhat more effective when applied before an anticipated rain event when slug activity increases. Available in standard pellet and mini-pellet formats.

Monterey Sluggo Plus (Iron Phosphate + Spinosad)

Monterey’s Sluggo Plus adds spinosad to the iron phosphate base, extending the active pest range beyond slugs and snails to include earwigs, cutworms, pillbugs, and sowbugs. This dual-active formulation is the most practical choice for garden beds where multiple soil-surface pest species are present simultaneously. The spinosad component is organic and OMRI listed, maintaining the safety profile of the iron phosphate base product. Apply and reapply on the same schedule as standard Sluggo.

Escar-Go (Iron Phosphate)

Escar-Go is a reliable iron phosphate bait with a similar formulation to Sluggo and comparable performance. It is often available at a slightly lower price point and is appropriate as an alternative or substitute when Sluggo is unavailable. Same application rate and timing apply.

Metaldehyde Baits: Faster but More Restricted

Metaldehyde is a synthetic compound that acts on the nervous system of mollusks, killing slugs more quickly than iron phosphate (typically within 24 hours) and remaining effective in a slightly wider range of soil moisture conditions. The faster kill and the fact that dead slugs are visible on the soil surface after treatment make it immediately satisfying to use. However, metaldehyde is genuinely toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, and ingestion of a small amount of bait by a dog or cat constitutes a veterinary emergency. It is also toxic to birds and aquatic invertebrates.

Metaldehyde bait is appropriate only when all of the following conditions are met: children do not have access to the treated area, no pets are present or the treated area can be fully restricted from pet access until bait is consumed or removed, no wildlife exposure pathway exists (no open water nearby, no areas frequented by foraging birds in the bait zone), and the faster kill rate is genuinely necessary.

Corry’s Slug and Snail Killer (Metaldehyde)

Corry’s is the most widely available residential metaldehyde bait product, with consistent efficacy against both slugs and snails in dry and wet conditions. It is appropriate for the restricted situations described above where the faster kill and all-weather performance justify the more restricted application conditions. Follow label application rates precisely and do not apply near water features, bird feeding areas, or in gardens where pets have any access.

Application Timing: Evening Is Non-Negotiable

All slug and snail bait products perform significantly better when applied in the late afternoon or evening, when slug activity begins. Morning applications expose bait to full sun and daytime drying, reducing attractiveness and efficacy before peak slug activity occurs. Evening application allows fresh bait to intercept slugs during their nighttime feeding activity.

Apply bait around the perimeter of the affected planting area and between plants rather than directly against plant stems, creating a band that slugs must cross to reach the plants. Slugs travel from daytime harborage sites in mulch, debris, and soil to plants at night, and bait placed along those travel routes intercepts them before they reach vulnerable plants.

Reapply after rain: both iron phosphate and metaldehyde baits dissolve and are displaced by rain, requiring fresh application to maintain control through wet periods.
