How to Install a Pea Gravel Patio
Installing a pea gravel patio is one of the most accessible DIY landscaping projects a homeowner can undertake. Unlike poured concrete or mortared paver installations, pea gravel requires no specialist tools, no mixing, and no curing period. A straightforward patio can be completed in a single day once materials are on site, and the process is forgiving of minor unevenness in the base — the gravel self-levels when raked to a consistent depth.

Step 1: Plan and Mark the Patio Boundary
Planning the patio footprint before breaking ground is the most important preparation step. A well-planned layout avoids rework and ensures the finished patio fits the space correctly.
Mark the intended patio boundary using string lines and timber pegs for straight-edged designs, or a garden hose or marking paint for curved or irregular shapes. Step 2: Excavate to Depth
Excavation depth determines how much finished depth the installed gravel will have, and it needs to account for all layers in the build-up.
For a standard pea gravel patio over landscape fabric, dig out the marked area to a total depth of approximately 5 inches. This provides room for a 2-inch compacted sub-base layer and a 3-inch finished gravel depth. Remove all excavated material from the site. Clear any large roots, debris, or organic material from within the patio footprint before moving to the next step. Leaving organic material in place under the patio creates soft spots that will cause the surface to settle unevenly over time.
The depth does not need to be perfectly uniform across the entire patio area. Minor variation of half an inch or so is acceptable because the gravel will fill in and level when raked. A reasonable consistency of depth matters more than absolute precision.
Step 3: Compact the Sub-Base
Compacting the excavated soil creates a firm, stable platform that prevents the gravel layer from sinking under use over time.
For small patios up to around 100 square feet, a hand tamper worked systematically across the full base area in overlapping passes is sufficient. For larger patios, a plate compactor produces a more consistently compacted result with less physical effort and is available to rent from most tool hire centers.
Work across the base in parallel strips, overlapping each pass by about a third of the tamper plate width. Pay particular attention to the edges and corners where compaction is easiest to miss. The finished sub-base should feel firm and solid underfoot with no soft or springy patches.

Step 4: Lay Landscape Fabric
Landscape fabric is a critical component of a long-lasting pea gravel patio. It prevents weed seeds from germinating in the gravel layer, stops soil from working up into the pea gravel over time, and helps maintain the separation between the gravel and the sub-base.
Cut the fabric to cover the full patio footprint with a small overlap onto the edging line all the way around. If more than one piece is needed, overlap the joins by at least 6 inches. Secure the fabric with landscape fabric staples or U-pins pushed firmly into the ground at intervals of around 12 to 18 inches, paying particular attention to edges and overlaps.

Step 5: Install Edging
Edging is what keeps pea gravel contained within the patio footprint. It is not an optional finish — it is a functional structural component that prevents lateral stone migration under foot traffic and rainfall.
Install the chosen edging material around the full perimeter of the patio, securing it firmly to resist outward pressure from the gravel fill. The top of the edging should sit level with, or very slightly above, the intended finished surface of the gravel.
Common edging options and their characteristics:
Steel landscape edging is the cleanest-looking and most durable option for curved and straight patio edges. It sits almost flush with the ground, produces a crisp visual boundary, and resists displacement well when properly staked.
Aluminum edging performs similarly to steel at a slightly lower cost, though it is more prone to bending on long straight runs.
Pressure-treated timber boards (2×4 or 2×6) are a cost-effective option for straight-edged patios and provide a strong physical barrier. Ensure any timber used is rated for ground contact. Boards are secured with timber stakes driven into the ground at 3-foot intervals on the outer face.

Step 6: Fill with Pea Gravel
With the sub-base compacted, landscape fabric laid, and edging in place, the patio is ready to fill.
Use a wheelbarrow to bring gravel to the site and distribute it across the patio area. Pour in enough to create a layer approximately 1 inch deep and tamp it down lightly — this initial compacted layer locks the landscape fabric in place and provides the firm base for the finished surface.
Top up with more gravel until the total depth reaches 3 inches. Rake the surface level, working from the edges inward. Check the depth in several places with a tape measure and add more gravel where needed.
The finished surface should be level with the top of the edging, or sitting just inside it. Avoid overfilling above the edging height, as this will encourage stone spillage at the borders.

Rake in one direction rather than randomly. Working the rake in consistent parallel passes produces a more even surface than random multidirectional raking.
Order slightly more gravel than the calculated volume. Having a small surplus on hand means you can top up any low spots immediately rather than making a return trip for more material.
