Patio Edging and Borders: Keep Your Patio in Shape for the Long Term
Patio edging is the structural element that keeps the surface material contained, the patio boundary defined, and the overall shape intact over time. Without solid edging, gravel migrates into surrounding turf, pavers drift laterally under load, and the patio gradually loses the clean lines that make it look and function as intended.
Edging is installed after base preparation and before the surface material is laid. Getting it in early, and getting it right, is one of the simplest ways to ensure the patio holds its shape for years without remedial work.
What This Hub Covers
Patio Edging Ideas and Options compares all common patio edging materials, steel, aluminum, plastic, timber, concrete pavers, and natural stone, across durability, installation difficulty, cost, and visual style.
Best Patio Edging Products reviews specific edging products available to buy, with recommendations by material type and application.
How to Install Patio Edging walks through the installation process for the most common edging types, including how to achieve clean curves, how to secure edging on slopes, and how to connect sections neatly.
Why Edging Comes Before the Surface Material
Installing edging before the surface material is a sequencing principle that many DIY guides get wrong. If edging is installed after gravel or pavers are in place, it cannot be driven or embedded to the correct depth alongside the surface, and it cannot provide the lateral restraint needed from day one.
Edging installed in the correct sequence sits against the compacted sub-base on the inside and is backfilled on the outside, creating a stable restraint that resists outward pressure from the surface material. This setup is far stronger than edging installed into soft soil alongside a completed patio surface.
Where Edging Fits in the Installation Sequence
Edging follows base preparation and precedes weed membrane installation and surface laying. For the full installation sequence, see our patio installation guide hub.
