Why This Conversion Matters

Mulch suppliers sell bulk mulch by the cubic yard. Mulch depth is most easily thought about in inches. Garden bed area is measured in square feet. Connecting these three measurements requires one unit conversion, and the cubic yard to cubic foot relationship (1 yard = 27 cubic feet) is the core of that calculation.

How to Calculate How Much Mulch You Need

Step 1: Measure your bed area in square feet. Measure the length and width of each bed and multiply them together. For an irregular bed, divide it into approximate rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results.

Step 2: Convert your desired mulch depth to feet. A 3-inch mulch layer equals 0.25 feet (3 divided by 12). A 4-inch layer equals 0.33 feet. A 2-inch layer equals 0.17 feet.

Step 3: Multiply area by depth and divide by 27. Area in square feet multiplied by depth in feet gives cubic footage. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

Worked Example

You have two beds: one measuring 12 by 8 feet, and one measuring 15 by 5 feet. You want to apply a 3-inch (0.25-foot) mulch layer.

Bed 1: 12 x 8 = 96 square feet. Bed 2: 15 x 5 = 75 square feet. Total area: 171 square feet.

171 x 0.25 = 42.75 cubic feet. Divided by 27 = 1.58 cubic yards. Order 2 cubic yards to allow a small safety margin.

Bag Mulch vs Bulk Mulch

Bagged mulch is typically sold in 2-cubic-foot bags. For small projects, divide the total cubic feet required by 2 to find the number of bags needed. Bulk mulch delivered by truck is significantly more economical for projects requiring more than 3 to 4 cubic yards.
